Most engagement photos fail for the same reason. Somebody lines the couple up, tells them to put a hand on a hip, and then asks them to look natural.

Nobody looks natural on command.

You Do Not Have to Know How to Pose

Here is the thing almost every couple tells me in the first ten minutes: "We're really awkward in photos."

You are not awkward. You have just never been given anything to do.

I do not line people up and bark directions. I give you easy things to do. Walk down that block and tell each other about your day. Stand here and pull her in. Whisper the worst thing you can think of and see what happens.

Then I get out of the way and shoot what actually happens.

That is the whole method. Half the best frames in any engagement gallery come from the two people forgetting a camera is there.

Thinking About Proposing? Read This Part Twice.

If you are planning to propose, you have one shot at it, and your phone in a stranger's hand is not going to cut it.

The plan matters more than the location

A proposal shoot is really a logistics problem. Where is she coming from. What is the cover story. Where am I standing so she does not spot me. What is the signal.

We work all of that out ahead of time. I show up early, find an angle with a clean background and a clear sightline, and blend in like anybody else out for a walk.

You get the moment itself, her face in the second she realizes what is happening, and then the reaction photos right after when you are both a mess about it.

Then we keep shooting

Once the ring is on, we walk. Twenty or thirty minutes of the two of you in the middle of the best hour of your year.

That is when the phone calls start going out to family. Those frames of her on the phone crying at her mom are usually the ones people frame.

Where to Shoot Around Orlando

You do not need a destination for this. Central Florida is full of places that photograph beautifully and cost nothing to stand in.

Downtown Winter Garden

Brick streets, the old depot arch, a hummingbird mural, City Hall, and a vine-covered fountain inside a couple of blocks. It might be the most underrated backdrop in Central Florida. It also means we can cover a lot of visual ground without ever getting in a car.

Winter Park

Park Avenue and Central Park give you the rose garden, the fountain, the stone pergola, and the Est. 1882 clock. Kraft Azalea Gardens is five minutes away and gives you cypress, lakefront and deep shade, which is the reason it stays workable in the middle of summer.

Bok Tower Gardens

An hour south in Lake Wales, and the one place on this list worth the drive. Live oaks dripping Spanish moss, a long reflecting pool, formal gardens, and the tower itself. It does not photograph like anywhere else in Central Florida.

Lake Louisa State Park

Clermont, about forty minutes out. Open water, cypress, sand, and the best sunsets within an hour of Orlando. This is the one to pick if you want something that does not look like a garden.

Somewhere that means something to you

The park where you had your first date. The place you both go every Sunday. The apartment where you actually live.

Those sessions are always better, because you are not performing a location, you are just in it.

Timing: When to Book and What to Wear

Book six to eight weeks before you need the photos in hand. If these are going on save the dates, work backward from your mailing date, not your wedding date.

Shoot at golden hour. In Florida that is the last ninety minutes before sunset, and in summer it is also the only time being outside is not a punishment. I plan around it every time.

Wear what you would wear on a good date. Two outfits at most. Coordinate, do not match. Skip the giant logo. If one of you is in jeans and the other is in a gown, the photos will feel off no matter how good the light is.

Bring a second look if you want range. One relaxed, one dressed up. It doubles what the gallery can do for you later.

What You Actually Get

Engagement sessions start at $350.

Every gallery includes high resolution digital files with no cap on downloads. That is worth saying plainly, because most photographers do cap it. You get all the best photos from the session, professionally edited, and you download as many as you want. Some, all, whatever you feel like. It is your call, not mine.

You get an online gallery you can share with family and order prints from.

Turnaround is within three weeks. I try hard to beat that and usually do, but I would rather give you a real number than a hopeful one.

These Photos Have a Longer Life Than You Think

Couples book an engagement session for the save the dates and then get surprised by how much else the gallery ends up doing.

It becomes the wedding website header. It becomes the sign at the entrance to the reception. It becomes the photo her father puts in his toast slideshow, the print that goes on your parents' refrigerator, and the one you both quietly switch your profile pictures to on the same night.

It is also the last set of photos of the two of you before everything changes. Not engaged-and-planning. Just you two, in the middle of the best year, before the seating chart exists.

That is worth an hour of your time.

Engagement Photos Are Also a Rehearsal

Here is the part couples do not expect.

If I am shooting your wedding, the engagement session is where we figure each other out. You learn what it feels like to have me around. I learn how you two are together, what makes her laugh, which side he likes better, how much direction you actually want.

On the wedding day, that hour pays for itself ten times over. You are not meeting your photographer for the first time while you are already nervous about everything else.

The Platinum wedding collection includes $100 toward an engagement session. The Diamond collection includes the session outright.

Let's Get It on the Calendar

If you are engaged, book the session before the wedding planning swallows the entire year. If you are about to propose, reach out early so we can plan it properly instead of scrambling.

Either way, tell me a little about the two of you and what you have in mind, and I will put together an exact quote.
